Lower taxes with the Conservatives

lib-dems-taxingNick Clegg’s “tax cutting ” Liberal Democrats have been rather exposed by recent council tax figures.

As bills land on door mats, calculations show that the average Band D tax in Conservative authorities in London is £963.  Liberal Democrat authorities charge a staggering £1250 to Band D Londoners.  Labour authorities charge an additional £28, coming in at £991.

Labour try and use an average council tax per dwelling figure to try and make their tax look lower than Conservatives.  In reality, all this shows is that houses in Labour areas tend to be cheaper than in Conservative areas and doesn’t reflect spending decisions taken at a local level.

The independent House of Commons Library backs my view saying  (House of Commons Library, Standard Note, 4 May 2004).

to compare year-on-year increases council taxes are expressed in terms of the average Band D council tax for a two adult dwelling. This ensures a like-for-like comparison is being made between years. Using a council tax per dwelling figure for comparison is not suitable. This is because in different local authority areas the mix of dwellings by value may be significantly different from another. The average Band D council tax figure accounts for this”

The bottom line is, whichever way you calculate it – Liberal Democrats cost you nearly £300 more!
