Swinging in Islip Manor Park
The Deputy Mayor was swinging, so was I. The kids were really getting into it, but Cllr Hazel Ware (the former mayor of Ealing) remained dignified and watched from the side. Not a rave, but the opening of the new playground yesterday in Islip Manor Park brought out the big kid in us.
When I became the Cabinet member for Children’s Services in Ealing in May 2006, one of the first things I did was a chair a panel of officers and voluntary sector representatives, that selected a number of projects to submit to the Big Lottery Fund (BLF) for money to improve play equipment. There were 21 projects chosen across the Borough and some two years later, they are starting to come to fruition. The funding has been matched by Ealing Council and in Islip Manor’s case the children of two local schools (Willow Tree Primary and Mandeville Special School) helped in choosing the theme and selecting the play equipment.
It’s a slow process. We had to submit our bids a couple of times to the BLF. We had to have a play strategy in place. We had to get all the appropriate planning consents. I’m sure the local children will agree that it was worth it.
