It never rains…….

….. it’s not so much pours but more like a monsoon for Gordon Brown at the moment.

Fresh from coming 5th in Henley behind the BNP with a humiliating 3% of the vote, it seems to have got worse this weekend.

Firstly, Wendy Alexander, the Labour leader in Scotland, resigns because of a failure to properly declare contributions to her campaign to get that post.  Then David Marshall, MP for Glasgow East resigns due to ill health.  The results in that seat at the 2005 general election were:

David Marshall (Labour)  18,775

Lachlan McNeill (SNP) 5,268

David Jackson (Lib Dem) 3,66

Carl Thomson (Conservative)  2,135

George Savage  (Scottish Socialist) 1,096

Majority 13,507 (43.7% )

Turnout 30,939 (48.2%)

Mr Marshall had a majority of 13507, some 44%, needing a 22% swing for Labour to lose.  The Electoral Calculus website, which is currently predicting a Conservative landslide at the next election (based on current opinion polls), is predicting Glasgow East as still a strong Labour seat with a reduced (albeit still very big) majority of 30%.  Given Labour’s recent performance in Crewe and Nantwich and Henley, I bet Gordon Brown would grab that 30% with both hands if anybody were to offer it to him now.
